A gathering of residents from diverse backgrounds gathered at the Pavilion in Marrickville to view excerpts from the soon to be released documentary, Come Walk With Us, Vicky Morta’s story, a seafarer and member of the Maritime Union of Australia. The documentary tells something of Vicky’s challenges as a First Nations woman from the Ngadjou’jii tribe as she made history becoming the first Indigenous female in the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).
The viewing was followed by a panel discussion that enabled lively thinking and questions and many new and old allies made connections. Panel members were: Uncle Pastor Ray Minniecon, from Scarred Tree Ministries, and a descendant of the Kabi Kabi nation, the Gurang Gurang nation of South-East Queensland, and the South Sea Islander people; Tony Cook, MUA Chairperson First Nations Committee and Bidjigal man, who works on the Sydney ferries; and Chair Frank Panucci .
The film, produced by the MUA with Executive Producer, Thomas Mayo and the MUA Film Unit members, Fabio Cavadini and Mandy King, will be a very useful addition to resources for the Voice campaign. The event was co-hosted by the MUA and FILEF, the Federation of Italian Migrant Workers and their Families/Federazione Italiana Lavoratori Emigrati e Famiglie.
