NSW Aboriginal Land Council welcomes the Premier’s commitment to Aboriginal Affairs
10/02/22. The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) welcomes the NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet’s commitment to make Aboriginal issues a priority for his government
NSWALC looks forward to working with the Government to translate this commitment into practical delivery around the State. This follows recent media reports detailing Mr Perrottet’s determination to implement changes within each ministry to deliver better outcomes in partnership with Aboriginal peoples in NSW, in line with the NSW Government’s Closing the Gap commitments.
The NSWALC Chairperson Councillor Danny Chapman said the Government’s engagement with Closing the Gap is critical to delivering genuine change. “The Closing the Gap agreement commits the Government to working in partnership to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people. This includes reforms to embed shared decision- making, build on the Aboriginal community-controlled sector, transform government institutions, share data, and achieving economic prosperity for our people.
NSWALC, as a member of the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (NSW CAPO), is committed to working in partnership with governments and Aboriginal communities to design and deliver practical and meaningful reforms.
We look forward to working with the Premier and the NSW Government on securing and activating our land across the regions for housing and employment, on building economic independence and prosperity, and protecting our Culture and Heritage and rights to Country,” he said.
Cr Chapman also congratulated the Kamilaroi woman Cheree Toka and the NSW Government on its recent decision to permanently fly the Aboriginal flag above Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“The flying of the Aboriginal flag has been a result of a five-year-long campaign led by Cheree Toka. It’s been a very long time coming and seeing the Aboriginal flag 24/7 atop one of Australia’s most famous landmarks will be a wonderful sight to behold.” Media enquiries: [email protected]
