ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART Document
“For years to come the Uluru Statement from the Heart will remain a live practical statement. Guiding us to an important destination.” Thomas Mayor
Some First Nations people have called the Uluru Statement from the Heart a roadmap or repair document.
Unlike historic documents of Indigenous aspirations that came before it and were addressed to the Parliament, the Uluru Statement from the Heart is directed to the Australian public. It asks Australians to change the constitution to allow Indigenous Australians a voice in the laws and policies that are made about them. “We meaningfully and consciously gave the Uluru Statement From the Heart as a gift to the to the Australian people,” explains Pat Anderson, an Alyawarre woman from the Northern Territory. “It’s a gift of healing. And indeed love. We don’t often like to use that word. But, you know, it’s a very, very emotional document”
The Uluru Statement is the largest ever consensus of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on a proposal for substantive recognition.
“Reconciliation is an easy word to say, but provides no mechanism for change. Constitutional change provides the mechanism to truly reconcile our two laws.” Galarrwuy Yunupingu
